Please turn in your Bibles to the Book of Acts… we are covering VSS 4-14 today… as we continue our chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse journey through the Bible.
Last time in Acts… we covered a detailed introduction to the book and the Prologue found in VSS 1-3.
Be sure to check out that message on our website if you missed it…
We covered the who, what, where, when, why and how to establish a foundation for the Book of Acts.
Today, we will look at some of my favorite verses in the Bible… the Promise of the Father… a beautiful promise, and an experience that changed my life forever.
The title of today’s teaching is “The Baptism With The Holy Spirit.”
Let’s Pray!
Today, we will pick up in V4, but since it’s been a few weeks, let’s re-read VSS 1-3…
Acts 1:1-3 “The former account I [who we established last week was Dr. Luke] made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, [And, Jesus never stopped. The Book of Acts is a continuation of Jesus’ ministry of doing and teaching… still in our lives today] 2 until the day in which He was taken up [the Ascension], after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.”
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ was accompanied by many infallible proofs… it’s fact… established by over 500 eye witnesses… and in the 40 days between His resurrection and ascension, Jesus led His disciples from unbelief to belief… as we saw in Luke 24 last week… and taught them about the kingdom of God… a huge theological concept.
And, now we pick up where the disciples are back in Jerusalem…
Luke 24:50-51 tells us more specifically… “And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.”
These final instructions and blessings just prior to Jesus’ ascension occured in Bethany… a village on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives.
Jesus passed through this town as He began His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem about 47 days prior.
The same town of His friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.
This town today is called “el-Azariyeh” (the place of Lazarus) by it’s Arab population.
This is also where Simon the Leper… whom Jesus healed… had a home.
Jesus was eating at Simon’s house when Mary came and anointed Jesus’ feet with the costly oil of spikenard or alabaster… using her hair to do so… taking on the fragrance of Christ.
And, the disciples now stand here with Jesus… in these final moments… for these final commandments and blessings before He ascends to Heaven.
Acts 1:4-8 “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
There’s a lot in these verses, starting with V4- the Promise of the Father which we just read in V5 and V8 is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.
In V4 Jesus tells them to wait for the Promise of the Father.
Notice Jesus’ instruction… stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Promise of the Father.
Wait to get baptized with the Holy Spirit… get empowered… then be witnesses everywhere.
Jesus does not give them a specific number of days… in V5 He said, “not many days from now.”
For many people an instruction to wait for an unspecified amount of time is hard.
The idea of receiving the Promise of the Father… a good gift of God… that’s great!
But, to wait is not many peoples’ ‘love language’… especially not Americans.
Though, apparently, this is a cross cultural phenomenon that has spanned the test of time… for we will see next week that Peter too… not surprising… was not good at waiting either.
Jesus said, “Wait for the promise of the Father.” Peter said, “Alright everyone, we need to appoint a Twelfth Apostle”… which was not Jesus’ instruction… and now to this day, Christian dispute over who the Twelfth Apostle is… Matthias or Paul?
We can avoid a lot of trouble in life by waiting and operating in His timing.
Jesus’ instruction to wait is also a healthy reminder of our place. He is God, and we are not.
He is the Master, we are His servants.
He instructs, we obey.
And, if you get that out of order… expect consequences.
I remember in 2008, I was being recruited for a career move to Chicago… which I thought was the mid-west.
So, I prayed, “God should I make this move?” Silence.
I prayed again… “God is this your will?” Silence.
Several times I prayed and God was silent.
So, like a fool, I took God’s silence as a “Yes”, and the next 2.5 years were some of the hardest of my life.
The problem was I wasn’t truly asking Him… I just wanted His blessing on my will.
Silence from God is a good indicator to wait.
That experience was painful and was self-inflicted, but shaped me...where NOW I’m good at waiting on the Lord. My wife says I wait better than anyone she knows, but this “gift” of waiting was birthed from the pain of my mistakes.
I do not like to get ahead of the Lord, and there always comes a day, when He clearly says, “Now go.”
And, I’ve always been blessed by being in His perfect timing.
The gift of waiting is anchored in trusting the good nature and omnipotence of God.
And, waiting is a test of faith. Can I trust Him? Do I have faith to wait… and it’s not always easy.
Waiting well is also anchored in a healthy understanding of roles… I serve Him… I submit to Him, so unless He is moving… I wait on His last instructions… which I find in His word… and by His leading from His Holy Spirit.
The Psalms have my some of the best encouragements on waiting… here’s two from the Psalms…
Ps 27:14 “Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!”
Ps 130:5-6 “I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, And in His word I do hope. 6 My soul waits for the Lord More than those who watch for the morning— Yes, more than those who watch for the morning.”
Let this be said of us.
Today, we are still to follow Jesus’ opening commands in Acts… wait, get empowered by the Holy Spirit, and then be a witness for Him everywhere.
Not only does Jesus tells them here in V4 to wait for the Promise of the Father, but Jesus is also the sender of the Promise…
In Luke 24:49 Jesus said, “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you...”
And, this is a beautiful picture of the trinity.
The Promise originates from the Father… He is the source.
Jesus is the Giver of the Promise.
The Holy Spirit is the Gift.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
So, how does Jesus send the Promise of the Father… He asks… He prays:
In John 14:16, Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever...”
And, notice that this promise is the first topic right at the beginning of the Book of Acts.
Luke establishes this Promise of the Father as foundational for the entire Book of Acts. It’s a significant promise.
Because… without the Promise of the Father… there would be no Book of Acts… No early church…
And, the Promise of the Father remains significant today… as we live in the same dispensation of time… the Church Age.
Once the Holy Spirit descended in Acts 2, the Church Age began.
The Church Age encompasses the period of time the church is on the earth (2000 years now and counting), and will end at the rapture of the church, another promise from God seen in 1 Thes 4:16-18 “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.”
The Church Age also corresponds to the dispensation of Grace.
Grace… because our sins are forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ…
John 1:17 states “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
We are not under the Law… we are under grace… which some mistaken as a license to sin, but that’s far from truth… just read the higher standards Jesus gave in the Sermon on the Mount Matt 5-7.
Jesus taught how God looks at the heart, not just our external observable actions.
For ex., Matt 5:27-28 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
And, Jesus gives similar instruction for divorce, oaths, retaliation, love, charitable deeds, prayer, fasting, wealth, and so forth…
So, it’s not that we have a license to sin, but that we have freedom not to sin… and this is possible not by our strength, but by the indwelling and empowering of the Holy Spirit.
In the OT, the Holy Spirit came upon people for specific tasks… to be a Judge for Israel… to be a king for Israel… to build the temple, but it was temporary.
That why David wrote in Ps 51:11 “Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.”
Which is a beautiful song, if you know it, but it’s not our experience with the Holy Spirit.
Our experience with the Holy Spirit is a permanent in-dwelling.
Let’s continue to V5, and observe how Jesus further describes the Promise of the Father…
Acts 1:5 “… for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Jesus uses the idea of baptism to help the disciple understand what will happen to them… when the Promise of the Father comes.
John the Baptist was in sync with Jesus, judging by John’s words in Mark 1:8 “I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Now consider what it means to be “Baptized.” By definition “baptizō” in Gk. means “dip, plunge, to make whelmed (i.e., fully wet), immersed.”
John the Baptist fully immersed people into water.
And, Jesus Christ fully immerses His followers into the Holy Spirit.
When you are baptized, you go under water… you come out… and you’re so excited and full of joy that you hug your baptizer… and you get them all wet too. Maybe you shake off like a dog, and get the crowd wet too.
And, that’s picturesque of the Baptism With the Holy Spirit… the Spirit of God overflows from you to others.
On the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, about six months prior to Jesus’ death, we read in John 7:37-39 “Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
This is the Baptism With the Holy Spirit. Torrents of living water flowing from your innermost being.
I heard a Pastor say you become a ‘living drinking fountain’… that’s putting it mild… I’d say God wants you to be a fire hose. By def. “rivers” can be rendered “river or stream”, but also “a flood or a torrent.”
Point is… God wants to fully immerse your life with the Holy Spirit… and then you will be empowered to be a witness for Him to effect other people’s lives.
Don’t fear it! It’s a good gift from a great Father in heaven.
If you have never asked for this gift… why not?
Just pray and ask for it. You prayed and trusted Jesus Christ to save you, you should want this gift too.
“But, Pastor Marc… won’t I start speaking in that tongue language?” Not necessarily. Some do, some don’t. My life was radically changed, scales were removed from my eyes to the scriptures, and I was delivered from alcohol… all in a moment, but I didn’t speak in tongues when I received this gift.
God is diverse in His ways, and the Holy Spirit is a gentleman. He knows you, and will perfectly give you what you need to be a powerful witness for Him.
And, when you need a boost… He will give you that too. Peter get’s filled again with the Spirit in Acts 4:8. He gives free refills! Amazing!
Listen to two additional verses how Jesus describes how good the Promise of the Father is...
John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
I don’t know about you, but, “Yes Lord”… help my memory… especially bring to remembrance specific verses at a specific time… for a specific person… that’s a power to be a witness that I can’t do in my flesh.
The times God has given me a word of wisdom or word of knowledge… He has given me a specific verse, and the Word was so relevant and specific for the person receiving… it was like time stood still for them. Like the Samaritan woman at the well.
John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”
God’s Holy Spirit empowers us to testify of the truth of Jesus Christ. If you want to be a bold witness for Jesus Christ, you need the Baptism With the Holy Spirit.
Sadly, many people today are just like the disciples in V6… “Baptism Shamptism… let’s talk about eschatology!”
Acts 1:6-7 “Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.”
Great question… bad timing.
This is not a dull question… Jesus taught often about the coming kingdom of God. Then He died… did the impossible and rose from the dead… seems logical that He would now usher in His kingdom…
Time to overthrow Rome...
Time to restore Israel…
Perhaps… time to find out who is seated at His right hand and left? I wouldn’t put it past the disciples.
But No! Jesus tells them “It’s not for you to know times or seasons…”
Can you imagine if Jesus told them the plan? “Alright, listen up everyone… I’m going to go, and then the Holy Spirit will come, and in about 2000 years, I’ll come again.”
Wait what? 2000 years?!? So much for living in immanency. Would the church have even launched or survived?
So, Jesus tells them in V7… No… this is not the time for eschatology… this is a time for power!
Jesus redirects them back to what He was talking about… the Baptism With the Holy Spirit.
They want more information about the Father’s plan, but Jesus tells them… ‘You don’t need more information… what you need is more power.’
And, we do too! It’s not time to be a theologian and play church… it’s time to be church.
Jesus saved you… do something with it!
Not in the flesh… but in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Look at V8…
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
When John the Baptist baptized, the element was water… and the purpose was repentance… to prepare the hearts of people in turning from unbelief to belief in Messiah Jesus Christ.
When Jesus baptized, the element is the Holy Spirit, and the purpose is power… to empower you.
Power… Gk. dunamis meaning “miraculous power, strength, ability.”
Which is different from ĕxŏusia the word translated as “authority” in V7, but often translated as power.
And, many of our hyper charismatic cousins want to make the Baptism With the Holy Spirit about authority to heal and speak in tongues and bark like dogs, and have holy laughter…
And, then they freak out our spiritually reserved cousins… and now we’re divided.
But, look at what the word says… the Baptism With the Holy Spirit is miraculous power… for what purpose? To what end?
Power to be witnesses. That’s what the word says!
Do you know what a witness is? Gk. mar´-toos | martus- meaning “a judicial witness or testifier.” By way of analogy “a martyr.” It’s where we get our English word martyr from.
And, the analogy fits because if you are put on the judicial stand to testify of Jesus Christ, you better believe when you are cross examined, your character will be put on trial too.
And, if you have not put to death the ways of your flesh, your testimony will be stricken. You will be a bad character witness… and your testimony will be disqualified.
You must be a martyr in this lifetime to be an effective witness for Jesus Christ… and that should convict us all because in our own power… if we are honest with ourselves… we know we are incapable.
But Jesus said, “you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses...”
It’s not about your strength… it’s about the Holy Spirit giving you His power to be a witness… and that’s why you should ask for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit… to be a witness…
Not to go witnessing… but, to BE… to live a life as that of a witness of Jesus Christ.
You need His Baptism… the immersion of His Holy Spirit to do this… otherwise, your like a Jew wandering in the wilderness… never entering the promised land… never receiving the Promise of the Father.
Jesus told His disciples when they received the power of the Holy Spirit, He would empower them to be witness locally, nationally, and globally… in Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Acts 1:8 is both the Key Verse and the outline for the Book of Acts…
Acts Chapters 1-7 “The Witness in Jerusalem.”
Acts Chapter 8-9:31 “The Witness in Judea and Samaria.”
Acts Chapter 9:32- Chapter 28 “The Witness to the End of the Earth.”
The disciples were in Jerusalem in the region of Judea… and would first be empowered to witness here to the Jews, who would nationally reject them.
Then, God uses persecution to move the disciples to be witnesses further out… in Judea and Samaria.
And, if you have maps in the back of your Bible, just take a look at Paul’s missionary journeys… to the end of the earth…
And, Christians have continued going everywhere....
But, what about the Pygmies in Africa? Yeah… they’ve been reached too. There are Pygmie churches. Google it.
But, look… for you… you’re never going to effectively be a witness if you don’t allow God’s Holy Spirit into the Jerusalem of your heart.
You have to ask Him… pray and ask Him to immerse you in His Spirit.
Jesus promised in John 14:16-17 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
I recently did a podcast with another Pastor about this topic… it’s on our FB page or I can text it to you.
But, a central topic was the three experiences we have with the Holy Spirit.
There are three Greek words to describe those three experiences… John 14:17 lists two of those words… “He dwells with you and will be in you.”
The Holy Spirit is with / para in Gk unbelievers… drawing them to Jesus.
In John 16:7-11, Jesus said, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.”
That’s the “with” experience. The Holy Spirit is not a party pooper trying to stop all fun in the world.
Satan is a deceiver sewing that lie. And, Satan is the true party pooper, for many people will follow him on the wide road of destruction and they will miss the true eternal party… everlasting joy in Heaven.
So, the Holy Spirit is with the unbeliever to guide them in the truth because He loves them and is leading them to Jesus… thus to heaven.
Once a person has faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit dwells in/ en in Gk… He dwells in the believer.
They literally become the temple of God… He seals them until the day of redemption.
Eph 1:13-14 reads, “...having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession...”
And, that sealing of the Holy Spirit is in part the Promise of the Father, but Jesus also speaks about a third experience with the Holy Spirit in Acts 1:5 and Acts 1:8.
In Acts 1:8, Jesus sais, “…when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” [Upon/ Gk. epi]
With unbelievers… In first saved believers… then Upon believers to empower them to be witnesses.
In Acts 1:5 Jesus describes this experience as being baptized with the Holy Spirit.
If that’s too charismatic for you… take it up with Jesus… Jesus said you must be born again in John 3 and Jesus said, “you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit” in Acts 1:5.
He didn’t say you’d be swinging from chandeliers and barking like a dog… that’s how man takes things too far.
The Baptism With the Holy Spirit is a gift from God… yet has been abused by man.
Yet it is still a good gift. James 1:17 states, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
But, even in the church, some people take the good gifts of God too far… applying their flesh and experience… trying to formalize His gifts.
In doing so, much of the church has come to fear the terms “Born again” and “Baptism of the Holy Spirit” because our hyper-charismatic cousins… still Christians… have gone too far.
Equally wrong are our legalistic cousins who have denied the Holy Spirit, and turned from receiving this gift.
Chuck Smith has said that many Christians, who have denied the Baptism of the Holy Spirit… or have not received the Holy Spirit… they are equivalent to the Jews wandering in the wilderness for forty years.
In God’s hand, but they never enter the promised land.
For you... hearers of the word today… don’t just hear… be a doer and ask God to immerse you in His Spirit.
Well, let’s continue to VSS 9-11…
Acts 1:9-11 “Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly [gazing intently or fixedly] toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, [Angels] 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”
The Ascension of Jesus Christ is MOST Appropriate…
Coupled with the Resurrection, the Ascension proves the Father approved of and validated all that Jesus said in did during His public ministry.
And, second, Heb 9:27-28 states, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.”
In His humanity Jesus died once… there was no need for Him to be offered… to die a second time for our sins. The ascension permitted a divine departure.
If I were at this scene, I would have done exactly what the disciples did… I would have intently watched until I could see Jesus no more…
Wouldn’t you? His ascension into Heaven was no doubt amazing…
But, also I imagine… deeply… they did not want Him to depart. It’s hard to see a loved one go… yet alone Jesus… Lord God Almighty.
So the Angels come and tell them, ‘Alright boys… snap out of it… why do you stand gazing up into heaven?’
There’s work to be done… Jesus said, ‘return to Jerusalem and wait for the Promise of the Father.’
And, in V11… the Angels state Jesus will so come in like manner as He departed…
Departing and returning with His disciples close by…
He left visibly and physically, and He will return in like manner…
Departing and returning on the Mount of Olives…
According to Zech 14:4 Messiah will return at this very location… “And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, From east to west, Making a very large valley; Half of the mountain shall move toward the north And half of it toward the south.”
And, when Jesus returns, we will be right there with Him… according to Rev 19… Jesus will return as a conquering King on a white horse, and Rev 19:14 reads, “And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.”
The same attire as the bride of Christ… according to Rev 19:8 “And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”
Righteous acts are NOT our good works… Isa 64:6 states “… all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags...”
There is only one righteous act in our lifetime… when we express our faith in Jesus Christ… and with this one act comes many blessings… now and eternally.
Well, let’s close looking at VSS 12-14...
Acts 1:12-14 “Then they returned to Jerusalem [Luke’s Gospel says “with great joy”] from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. [a short distance] 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. [V15 states 120 disciples total] 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers [by def. “from the womb”… not cousins… but His 1/2 brothers… same mother… different Father].”
Two things to note as we close… first, they are being obedient to Jesus’ final teaching here. They are right in the center of His will, and…
Second, look who is with them… Mary.
This is the last time we see Mary the mother of Jesus in the Bible. She who is blessed among women.
And, notice… no one is praying to her… and notice she is also obedient to Jesus’ command and waiting with all the other disciples for the Promise of the Father.
She too needs the Baptism of the Holy Spirit… a Spirit filled life.
If the Apostles needed this gift… if Mary needed this gift… How much more do we need the Baptism With the Holy Spirit today?
Let’s Pray!
If you are here today, and you’ve never prayed and asked for the Baptism With the Holy Spirit… do it now.
Jesus said...
Matt 21:22 “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
John 16:24 “Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
Come pray with me now… leave full of joy!
